Awhile back, I had made some claims about how I treated Clinton and the impeachment matter elsewhere. I already verified that I was not lying when I said I gave him credit for some things, but I could not get the search function to work to finish verification of other claims. Here, then, is a sample of my comments on the matter, from the Bush thread:
Impeachment is an indictment. Just because he is impeached does not mean that the Senate is obliged to convict. The Senate is within its discretion in determining that the matter is not serious enough to warrant removal, without having to deny the factual basis of the allegation. That is not jury nullification, that is applying the law when the law admits of ambiguity. No, America would not have folded, although it might have caused a diminution of regard for American institutions. Nor can one confidently say there would have been no economic impact, since investor confidence can easily be shaken by such events, and therefore the drop in the market might have been set in motion under Democratic leadership. But it hardly matters, since it is the beliefs of the Senators which are material to a determination of the stake they have in being cautious about removal.

I have faith in American institutions, and have to admit, at the end of the day, that although there was a case, it was somewhat weak. In the end, I couldn't really blame people from voting their consciences. I think that the support that he got was unseemly, and I thought that he should be impeached at least, which is, in fact, the only Constitutionally prescribed censure. I would probably have voted to remove him from office, myself. But I do not think that one should infer some big failure of the system from the failure to remove.........

It was not weak with regard to the factual allegations, it was weak with regard to being an appropriately serious cause for overturning the results of an election, especially when polls showed that the electorate continued to support the President.

,,,prudence takes into account the particulars of a situation in the application of moral principles, including the consequences of behaving in a certain way, to seek the best outcome. In a political "trial", consideration of the common good cannot be eliminated........
