From GS: SEMICON WEST
NOTEBOOK: UPBEAT TONE
DURING DAY 1
Summary: The front-end portion of SEMICON West began on Monday with an
upbeat tone and focus on potential growth in H2'03. Applied kicked off the day with
its analyst meeting during which it stated for the first time that its business is poised
for a recovery in H2'03 driven by high capacity utilization rates at the advanced
technology node and some pent-up customer demand. Several themes emerged from
our meetings at the show including a more upbeat outlook from the subcomponent
suppliers and the increasing concern that orders could pick-up substantially in Q3
and/or Q4, creating an unhealthy scramble for capacity in the industry. Managements
maintain a certain degree of cautiousness given the headfake improvement in
fundamentals that occurred last year, but the conference clearly marks a notable
change in tone to the positive. We reiterate our Attractive sector stance and belief
that investors should remain overweight the stocks until AMAT (OP/A) reaches 15%
EBITDA margins, our proxy for normalized industry cash flow.
