The difference between the two numbers is always divisible by 9. The sum of the digits of any number divisible by 9 is also divisible by 9. So, they simply add up the digits you type in and subtract the sum from 9 (or 18, etc.).
Example: You initial choice is 4321. Scramble it to 1234. The difference is 3087. 3 + 8 + 7 = 18. You type in 38, so the program should guess 7. It calcs 18 - 3 - 8 = 7.
