I see we don't want to get into "Auschwitz for Elders". Let's anyway, though. I think you're having an identity crisis about political loyalties.

It wasn't the Republicans or Libertarians that started that Ponzi scheme called Social Security. And it wasn't them that stuffed welfare into it to protect those welfare programs and ballooned the cost. Or indexed it to inflation. Or started Medicare. If you've got a complaint about this, you need to go talk to Ted Kennedy and the Democratic Party.

BUT: It's here. And the $s the oldsters put in were worth more than current dollars. Everyone knows that. Arguing that they only put in $25K and will get $200K out is asinine without considering inflation and time. AND that would be a fair and honest inflation rate, not the one the gov't uses. The gov't claims there is no inflation right now. When was the last time you saw a price drop? How much has gas gone up in your lifetime? I get a factor of 8. That makes $25k to $200k fair.

I'd favor a fair payout to current SS contributors, then shut it down and pass a law requiring set contributions to a private retirement account with some requirements on diversification. If you don't pay what you should into your account in any given year, the gov't takes that money as taxes and you get nothing for it. But the same guys who want to keep those empty busses running won't hear of this.

As for those empty busses spewing pollution being run by the gov't, why not have the gov't also take over airlines and trucking companies if gov't is so much better at this than private companies? Do you think if those busses and trains could be run at a profit, a company wouldn't spring up to do it?
