UPS' cost structure is better since they have an extensive ground network. FDX ground network, although expanding, still cannot compete with big brown's.

FDX has the largest market share in the overnight market, but UPS has the largest share of the 2nd day market. An even greater percentage of 2nd day air goes over the road.

Additionaly, UPS has greater delivery density ( packages per delivery stop ) and thus has better productivity.

FDX is still recognized for its impeccable service.
