GS US SEMI EQUIPMENT: TAKEAWAYS FROM DAY ONE OF GS TECH
CONFERENCE

Summary: The first day of the Goldman Sachs Tech Symposium kicked off in
Pheonix, AZ on Monday with presentations from Applied, Advanced Energy,
Axcelis, Credence, and ATMI. Notable takeaways from the day included: (1) the
overall tone of the conference was consistent with a continued cyclical recovery, (2)
the equipment companies were understandably unable to commit to significant
growth in the second-half of 2004, and (3) Credence's acquisition of NPTest is an
interesting development in the back-end where consolidation is long overdue. We
believe that in order for the stocks to regain momentum, the Street needs to become
convinced that fundamental momentum will continue into 2005. Given that
managements are not likely to have such visibility until mid-way through 2004, we
would expect the stocks to continue to be weak in the near- term.
