The reviewer tries to review a subject in the movie that he completely fails to understand. This is not surprising coming from a non-Christian who is trying to "look in".

Complaints about graphic violence are not exaggerated; indeed, what we are presented with is an orgy of brutality, a glorification in its own way of suffering and human cruelty.

Jesus became sin for us and God punished that sin and shed Jesus's blood to atone for all sin. Jesus was the willing sacrifice. You have to understand that He didn't have to do it for us. He was with God already, perfect, He needed nothing. Yet He allowed Himself to become a man and then suffer and die in this way to save man that had been lost. Without shedding of blood there can be no forgiveness. I posted on how the shedding of blood according to the law covered sins for a time. Read this post. The reviewer has no idea of what was going on spiritually throughout the suffering, death, and resurrection of Jesus.
