The real reason to get rid of the death penalty are the moral and ethical arguments associated with taking life and the uneven treatment that different courts, lawyers and judges apply to such cases.

Rebuttal:
Sorry there is even more conclusive proof that it way it turns, the death penalty is just plain bigotry. I gave no reference because I thought these figures to be understood. I agree that the death penalty is also inhumane. But that debate centers on a moral choice. The fact that the punishment is not distributed universally does not. Again, one must understand the use of percentages to show the bias...intended or not, the consequences are reprehensible.

These are not anecdotes.

“Blacks convicted of killing whites are sentenced to death 22 times more often than blacks who kill blacks, and more than seven times the rate of whites who kill blacks, said Carter, who co-founded the Atlanta-based Carter Center, a global development and human rights organization, with former President Jimmy Carter 20 years ago. “

“According to the NAACP Legal Defense Fund a black person is 11 times more likely to get the death penalty then a white person when the victim is white.”

Texas is especially bad… “No white child offender has been executed for
killing a black or Latino person. Nine of the 13 executions have been of black
or Latino prisoners”.

9/2003: “For first time in decades, Texas executes white man for killing black; critics say system biased”
When convicted killer Larry Allen Hayes voluntarily went to the death chamber earlier this month, it marked the first time in several decades that Texas executed a white person for killing a black person.
Texas has accounted for more than one-third of the 875 executions in the United States since the Supreme Court brought back capital punishment in 1976, but Hayes, put to death for killing two people, one of whom was black, was the only white executed by the state for killing a black during that time. Texas resumed capital punishment in 1982. Death penalty opponents say it underscores a nationwide problem.
