The use of trailing stops

Who uses them? Under what conditions? How tight are the stops you set? Do you apply them to all the holdings in your portfolio? Do you ever buy puts and/or sell covered calls instead?

I've been experimenting with setting trailing stops at 15-20% below recent highs or just below significant resistance points. The best approach seems to vary stock by stock, chart by chart, beta by beta.

Any general guidelines to recommend?
