Here is a short timeline of the abolishment of slavery.

Two Spanish colonies abolished slavery after the United States did, without the necessity of war. Both those nations are far less racially segregated than the United States, and have historically enjoyed much better relations between the races (the very concept of race is different, as they haven't had "one drop" rules).

I believe that had the south been allowed to peacefully secede, slavery would have been abolished for the sake of trade, if nothing else. The peaceful resolution of the issue may have avoided the subsequent century of racial oppression in the United States, and the highly segregated society (and permanent sub-class) that exists even today, and will exist for the foreseeable future.
