Mark: I believe that an experimental boule 3' in diameter was pulled more than 10 years ago. As you increase the diameter of the boule, its length must be shortened since the seed's strength is limited, so this little baby was only a foot or 45" long. Since the top and bottom must be discarded, there will be a point (which I do not know what it is) where there will be little advantage of growing larger diameter crystal. This of course, as long as the technology is the seed based (or the Czochralsky, and by now I forgot the gentelman name's spelling probably) crystal growing method. Research has been going for years to grow crystal in various edge defined, or web methods, but none have the zero defect quality required for VLSI and other integrated circuits.
