Don't know if you're still around, but I've concluded that there is no such thing as 'lower-risk biotech investing'.

It's all a crap shoot. No matter what drug or medication is being tested the science behind the effort and the requirements of the FDA make the process too uncertain to invest in. Now, as a gamble; that is a different story.

Perhaps in time after the Human genome information has been digested and analyzed a better more reliable process for drug discovery may be achieved, but that is still in the future. For a brief while I hoped companies like Vical or Isis would be able to achieve such an understanding, but like the other 95% of the biotechs they have come up short in their efforts.

For the average investor who is interested in biotech I would suggest investing into those few biotechs that seem to have a record of success. Genentech would be one. Biogen another. Perhaps there are a few others. Not many make the list. Biotech is a wasteland.
