I suppose I ought to actually submit a GOOFI stock for everyone's perusal, and see if it might be of interest. I nominate Visioneer, VSNR, which makes the way cool keyboard scanner and associated software. This stock was an IPO that came out a good deal north of where it now sits. Like so many tech stocks, it is widely despised at the moment. A number of tech stocks should fit the description "generally out of favor", if not "held in contempt." It might be a good time to sniff among the rubble, and see if there is anything with promise. The chart on this baby really sucks, but it may be bottoming out. Ingram Micro lists the Visioneer Paperport as one of their hottest selling items. It has a price point of $200-$300, great software, and a few patents. The big question is whether scanners are going to become a high demand item for computer users.
A non-tech stock that may qualify is KooKooRoo, a quietly expanding chain of upscale fast-food chicken joints in SoCal. The specialty is skin-less flame cooked chicken with lots of veggie side dishes for California's clueless yuppies. The food is great, the atmosphere is great, the locations are great. They have about 20 restaurants open, with a goal of 40 in the next year. Expansion is being funded internally, the company has zero long term debt. This company may not be so much "out-of-favor" as simply little-known.
