Agustus,

Thanks for taking the time to write such a wonderfully eloquent and well-considered post. It's hard to argue with a lot of what you are hoping for. Yes, America's traditions are well worth trying to preserve. I have no issues with that. I have no issues with the notion that we ought to expect our immigrant populations to join in the "melting pot" of our culture, though I dare say that I don't want the sushi chefs to start deep-frying their sashimi and serve it with hush-puppies. There are some limits to assimilation.

That said, I found that what you wrote is completely and utterly non-responsive to the concerns that I have addressed to you. For whatever reason, you seem to be make the huge mistake of equating the descent into a fascist hell that George Bush is promoting with some sort of a retention of "traditional values". That's nuts. Bush is one of the most dangerous revolutionaries who ever strode the stage of American history. His ideas are nothing short of being completely anti-American. He intends to destroy the social safety nets that compassionate Americans have come to see as the benevolent face of government. Bush intends to keep this nation in a permanent state of terror, with perpetual wars as the driving engine of the economy. The level of corruption will become astronomical, and the plight of working people will be greatly exacerbated by anti-labor laws going into place now and in the immediate future.

What you don't seem to see, and thereby you don't seem to be upset about, is that George Bush fully intends to wreck this nation. Just look at the twin deficits, the huge recent increase to the national debt ceiling, the arrogant manner of our militarized foreign policy, essentially run by the DoD rather than by diplomacy. This stuff is ALL BAD! No good. I don't care how many flags or how many Bibles George Bush wraps himself in. He's bad news for the average American. Oh, I'll grant you he's a godsend for the corrupt CEOs who are dragging us into a capitalist netherworld of corruption, deceit and fraud. But he's lousy for the middle class. He's doing everything he can to destroy the middle class and all the institutions that have made this such a great country for so long. He's wrecking that, for the sake of a tiny handful of big-time bribers. It's pathetic. Why don't people see through this charade? Why do people like you willfully blind yourself to the truth and only see the propaganda that Bush and Karl Rove push as your focus? The hell with your "traditional values". One important traditional value that George Bush understands is that there's a sucker born every minute, and that you can fool some of the people all of the time and that those are the ones to concentrate on.

You seem to be one of those suckers who have been taken in by Bush's empty rhetoric and lies about "traditional values". And you don't seem capable of seeing what is really going on behind the curtain.

I would ask you to pay more attention to that man behind the curtain. He's going to hurt you:

No question about it. He's going to hurt you. Because you're just too damn nice. And you're not paying attention to the real enemies we face. Remember, the oath for our military men is to defend the nation against "all enemies foreign and domestic". Today, it is the domestic enemies of your future you need be vigilant about.
