I read that the US tsunami monitoring system discovered this South Asian tsunami 4-5 hours before it happened, but only notified New Zealand and Australia.

The official US tsunami warning system bulletins are posted on the Internet, so anyone can read them. I posted it here... Message 20895787

In addition, it has been widely reported that the U.S. scientists tried to warn various other countries. However, they didn't have established communications channels and procedures so it didn't help. BTW, there was monster quake off Antartica a few days before the Sumatra quake. Here's that bulletin...

EVALUATION

THIS EARTHQUAKE IS LOCATED OUTSIDE THE PACIFIC. NO TSUNAMI THREAT EXISTS TO COASTLINES IN THE PACIFIC.

HOWEVER - THIS EARTHQUAKE HAS THE POTENTIAL TO GENERATE A WIDELY DESTRUCTIVE TSUNAMI IN THE SEA NEAR THE EARTHQUAKE. AUTHORITIES IN THAT REGION SHOULD BE AWARE OF THIS POSSIBILITY.

THIS WILL BE THE ONLY BULLETIN ISSUED FOR THIS EVENT UNLESS
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION BECOMES AVAILABLE.
