Your office worker has stumbled upon one of the secrets in successfully telling a joke ! She/He gets the audience smiling, if not inwardly laughing, before getting to or even remembering the punch line! The Irish joke I related, e.g., has several smile lines, when you analyze it, BEFORE the punch line,,,and it is short !! The Irish brogue is one. The winding Irish road, with its sheep and cows is another for many. The emphasis on 'ye' and other Irish expressions is another. The phrase the 'guarde' is another. The 'guarde' knowing my name is another (how exaggerated or rediculous is the thought of this for many) ! The wife sitting in and then falling out of the back seat is a smiling rediculous thought. And finally the punch line !!! All in a matter of 2 minutes,,,what a cleverly constructed joke !!
