Lower taxes in and of themselves do equal more freedom... higher taxes decrease freedom when considered in isolation

I see. That was not clear to me in your previous posts, especially since it looked here like you were saying Americans are freer than Canadians because they have lower tax rates:

If other things changed those changes could possibly swamp the difference resulting from the tax changes

So, would that mean that Canadians could actually be living freer lives than their US counterparts, even if they pay higher taxes?

I am no expert on Canada, having been there only a couple of times and visited only 4-5 major cities. Still, I have to say it looked like a place where people enjoyed high personal freedoms. Such as the following:

(1) Canadians can smoke marijuana for personal pleasure or to alleviate pains and aches. Are Americans free to do so?

(2) Homosexual Canadians can legally marry each other, as the state recognizes their equality with heterosexual persons. Are homosexual Americans as free?

(3) Canadian citizens or other legal residents cannot be locked up by the state and forgotten about for years on end, with no formal accusation nor rights to challenge that accusation in a court of law. Are Americans as as secure from wrongful imprisonment?

Now, considering the definition of "free" (i.e. not imprisoned or enslaved, nor subject to the will of others, etc), would you not agree with me that taxes are much less of a factor in how free you are than the freedom to do as you want without harming others, and the security that you will not be imprisoned without your day in court?
