”Because Jewel cannot accept the idea tens of millions of Americans can say ‘I support our troops’, which most people do, and be completely sincere in that statement while at the same time opposing the war.”

It would be to your benefit, if you changed outfits once in a while, pay a little more attention and actually consider the posts and posters you are interacting with. The attack dog routine is not productive or even pertinent in most cases, for this thread. I know you have a more natural form of discussion which is more in tune with the thread intent. There are as many lefties as righties here GST. Have you noticed that there is not a line in the sand with people of one type barking at people of the other? There are lots of threads designed to be boxing rings and tug_o_wars. Every thread doesn't have to be that.

For example, the above statement you contributed is a little off base:

That, to the best of my ability to consider the matter, is the kindest possible way to interpret the slogan.

The style here is more like this:

Here's the thing Laz, there are debate topics that can be conclusively resolved because they have finite determinants. Like a property decision... "Should we buy a new yaught on a social security fixed income?" For it: what fun we could have. Against it: no resources to support the idea. Conclusion: The family has no plans for a new yaught this year. End of debate.

There are also debates that lack finite criteria for making a conclusive decision; they only recommend according to the possibilities ... like power, societal values, sexuality, growth and discovery, etc. etc. etc. So, if you would like to pull up a chair great. Have a cup of tea and let's chat. However, you must bring a gift like the rest of us and if you aren't going to join the party ... you don't get the benefit of the chatter. And, you miss the rewards of imagining the possibilities with hope for the future and even eternity. No chair for you at this tea party until you are ready to offer your gift of gab. Sign on the door: 'Voyeurs not welcome.'

and this…

The thread header is serious but that doesn't mean we have to be stone cold and sedate all the time. This is a thread to explore ideas. Feel free to ask questions or pose ideas. I don't care a hoot if I propose an idea and it turns out that my premise is wrong. I expect that sometimes, because the intent is to change and renew what we already have, not fight to prove everything we think we know is, as it has to be, for eternity. That doesn't happen unless you question the conventional wisdom of the day.

People who are trying to score win points will be very frustrated here when nothing is showing up on the score board and they can't rally a side. So if we find a better way, grow and change, renew our spirits, reclaim the noble human condition we were born into, etc. etc. etc. perhaps we will find a way out of the thicket or at least notice that there are some roses ready to blossom. That would be worth something to me; although, I don't know if its measurable.

Not for everyone but if you ever decide to put your feet up and join us, that’d be great.
