OT re: dried food. I was at sea for a few years when younger, and the Authorities were still not quite sure that refrigeration was really reliable, or perhaps that the machinery could survive a battle. We thus had to stock large amounts of old-fashioned dried and salted food (peas, salt pork, cod etc.).

This was all very well, except for the rule that all stores had to be used up over their useful life (accountants really run things, you know). Because of this, I still like soup made from dried peas and salt pork. Salt cod I can do without.

If you are going to live on dried food in a cabin in the woods for a year, I do hope that the suppliers are better than they were 50 years ago.

Tony.
