Re heavy oil vs tarsands/oilsands. My first impression was that heavy oil was better or easier to produce than oilsands. I also get the impression that bitumin (unupgraded stuff that comes from oilsands) is priced off of heavy oil. However, recoverable oil in a heavy oil field is only 5 to 15% of oil in place, while bitumin recovery is 80% with mining or 60% with SAGD. I guess my question is whether heavy oil could be practically produced using SAGD. They have used a version of this process in the Kern River US heavy oil, so why not in AB?
But what does BVI do?
