Samsung makes its bid to drive 4G and see off ‘Intel Inside’

Published: Friday 2 September, 2005

The global balance of power in wireless technologies is shifting inexorably. In the 1990s, we saw Korean giant Samsung placing its weight behind an American technology – Qualcomm’s – to counteract a primarily European technology, GSM. At the turn of the century, we saw the emergence of the 802 standards family as major parallel forces to the cellular platforms, giving US companies, for the first time, the lead role in wireless, ahead of Europe. Intel’s ‘handtop’ will spearhead a new bid to outdo TI and Qualcomm

Published: Friday 2 September, 2005

In the past two years, Intel’s Developer Forums have become primarily showcases for its wireless and mobile developments, and last week’s event in San Francisco was no exception. Now, the challenge is to prolong the life of the Intel architecture by evolving it into new devices that will be relevant in the era of ubiquitous wireless communications, when the PC is no longer the primary client platform. Eventually, there will be a single handheld device that combines wireless IP communications for voice, data and video; mass storage; and acts as a credit card, home automation controller, music and video player and telephone directory. The big question is whether the dominant converged devices spring from a cellphone or PC heritage and, while Intel and Microsoft are both making a play for the former market, their real opportunities lie in creating a PC-oriented IP platform that can incorporate telephony capabilities too.
