Cambridge, Novaled claim OLED advances

Spencer Chin EE Times 11/04/2005 9:54 AM EST)

MANHASSET, N.Y. — Two companies active in organic-light-emitting-diode (OLED) technology, Novaled GmbH and Cambridge Display Technology, have announced advances in OLED efficiency and manufacturing, respectively.

Novaled (Dresden, Germany) said it has produced a saturated green OLED with a current efficiency of 95 candelas per ampere. The green light emission was measured at a brightness of 1,000 candelas per square meter and an operating voltage of only 2.55 volts.

According to Novaled’s chief technology officer Jan Blochwitz-Nimoth, the current efficiency was 20 percent better than what was previously achieved.

Cambridge (Cambridge, U.K.) said it has successfully produced 14-in., full color displays that use its polymer OLED technology. Earlier this year, Cambridge demonstrated several 5.5-in. displays.

The active-matrix displays are produced through an ink-jet printing process and feature a resolution of 1280 x 768 pixels.
