I thought the Tainos were the meal of choice for the Caribs.

In any case small pox or some other Western Civ disease probably consumed most of the remaining stock and the few that had the temerity to survive the onslaught of disease probably succumbed to the pressure of forced labor. Near downtown Santo Domingo there are some magnificent caves with fresh water ponds at the bottom that the locals used as hideouts to evade the Spanish who were beating the bush for slaves in the early days, nice visitors that they were. Eventually the Spanish discovered the caves.

Our tour guide recalled here childhood days when her grandmother would bring the grandchildren to the caves for bathing and to escape the heat.
