Mephisto,

Rockwell is an aerospace firm. I believe they sold off part of their defense business as part of the recent consolidation in that industry and are now sitting on a substantial cash hoard. Lots of speculation that the company will soon put the cash to work. I'm not sure what, if any exposure, Rockwell has to the semis. I don't follow the company.

Looking at First Call I notice that of the six analysts who cover MEMC, two have downgraded earnings expectations for 1997 and one has upgraded. While the projected earnings for next year are down from 30 days ago, they remain above estimates from 90 days ago. True, the current numbers do show an expected growth rate of only 14% year over year but that is due primarily to the increasing estimates for this year.

MEMC's earnings projections for 1997 will probably start to climb after we get through the current period of uncertainty in the semis.
