"Don't really care how it sounds to you"

Well, I do.

Message 23205794

"I think the removal of Saddam's regime went great, a resounding success, and the jury for me on the rebuilding efforts is still out"

Thank you! That certainly wasn't the sense you were getting across in previous posts I've referred to from you!

Now, "the jury for me on the rebuilding efforts is still out" gives a substantially different message than:

"And the Pres has had a chance for 3 years. He doesn't get an unlimited blank approval for ANYTHING" and

"The whole idea that 140k troops couldn't succeed in 3 years, but 161k troops probably WILL succeed, and that is striking fear into the hearts of the Dems sounds like your paranoid cynical fantasy to me."

This latter definitely says they DID NOT succeed. And it rings substantially different than: "the jury for me on the rebuilding efforts is still out"

"Probably not arguments from posters on SI"

That is what I thought. Thanks for that clarification.

"Do you know any of them and by what date they are expected to be achieved so that we outside observers can have some method of determining progress?"

I think you know what is being attempted: A reasonable lowering of the murder rate. A reliable ability of Iraqi government to govern democratically and without overthrow from hostiles. A certainty that Iraq cannot be used as a launching pad for attacks against America. A footing in Iraq for American forces to safeguard their interests in a strategic area of the planet.

All of these things you can find in the President's speeches.

President Bush has said it will be a long process winning out over time. Experts appear almost daily on radio and in magazine stating a reasonable timefame of five years and up. This makes sense to me. Although I think it likely that fairly stable conditions will exist within a year. Keep in mind that initiatives beginning against Iran may create chaos in the ME with too many uncertainties to integrate into any set equation.

Also, this insurgency war is fueled by Iran and Syria. They are a threat to Maliki and they supply weapons, money and terrorists. Their involvement cannot be stopped with negotiation. What would one offer them? So this initiative of stopping Iranian control over hostiles and indirectly over the confidence of the Iraqi government is critical and is being ramped up right now.

As to detailed goals (take this street by Tuesday and secure those 21 blocks by no later than Mar. 11, etc. etc.)--sorry. I think those details are perhaps beyond the average person. The average person has never been in the military, has never been to Iraq, doesn't speak Arabic, is not Muslim, and has never managed much more than their own family.
