I’m more pessimistic. I think the best we can do is try to shore up the Kurds and possibly lean on them to share oil wealth with the Sunnis. Staying between Sunni & Shia is both endless and thankless. Nothing we can do about that. The problem with helping the Kurds towards independence is Turkey. So all in all, it does not look good.

Iran will win wrt to Shia portion of Iraq. Perhaps Sunnis will, as you say ride Al Q out on a rail, or perhaps Sunnis become the 2'nd Pal problem of the ME. But short of resurrecting Saddam, or finding his replacement, that is where things will go. US staying does not change the outcome, just delays it at the cost of more of us. What’s the point?
