The first point is dubious (the more we learn about Saddam's planning for post-invasion, the more we learn about the invites he was sending out) and the second quite false. AQ would love nothing better than to turn some section of Al Anbar into another Islamic Republic (indeed, they have already declared one). It's much better suited for their purposes than out-of-the-way Afghanistan.

I'd say that staying because they want us there is playing into their hands.


They don't "want us there", they want to defeat us. It is not my intention to oblige them, but yours, when you propose running away.
