Why are you and Hawk so damn sure when few share your certainty on iraq on either side?
Because I have been following what Al Qaeda themselves say and believe, and I believe they mean what they say. To do this, you have to read the Israeli sources who report it, because the MSM won't report it and have trouble taking it seriously. It conflicts with their worldview. In their worldview, only the [big bad] US acts, and everybody else merely reacts. It's a convenient idea, since it means we could leave Iraq without handing it to AQ, or at the minimum, handing them a humongous propaganda victory that they could dine out on for years, however they wound up getting on with the Iraqis. But it's hooey, and you'll be hard pressed to find any AQ expert, even those like Mike Scheur who loathe the Bush administration, to agree to it.
