"Is it more like catholic/protestant or are there deeper tensions elsewhere as appears in the Middle East."

The wedge is deep and severe and tension doesn't even begin to describe it. One considers the other to have committed the greatest and most unforgivable sin on Earth by corrupting the Quranic word of God. The religions are so close most people can't tell them apart, as you can probably imagine, but it is that very closeness that forges the hatered between them. If you listen to the radicals, no less than genocide of one upon the other would resolve their differences.

I suspect most people figure prophetic events will resolve their differences but up until then no chance for reconcilliation.
