presented as a settled conclusion a hypothesis

Of Course its a hypothesis. How else does one try to analyze a situation that did not happen ?

When I was in school, often our Math & Physics assignments would consist of hypothetical situations eg :

"Assume X to be true as a starting point, and Y to be the conclusion reached". The assignment was more focussed on our ability to think thru things and either describe why the conclusion Y was correct, or that enough was described why Y was incorrect, and Z was more correct.

Sure there were some lazy guys that just scribbled, "yes X leads to Y, got no argument there". They were usually the guys who flunked.
