The US national interest is FAR more focused on the Persian Gulf than it is in the desolate mountains of Afghanistan.

So help me understand - why did the US invade the desolate mountains of Afganistan ?

If any nation has an interest there, it's India, Russia, and China.

India has no defense interest there - no common border. India is sending aid money and workers to Afghanistan to help with infrastructure issues like roads between places.

Longer term, India is negotiationg with Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan for an oil/gas pipeline from Iran to India. The countries in transit get a transit fee, India gets a pipleine of assured resources.

India knows well enuff not to meddle in Afghan politics - the region current labeled as NWFP in Pakistan and NE Afghanistan (around the Hindukush ranges) has never been ruled by anyone except local tribes for centuries. In living history, the only person who was able to control that region was a gentleman called Khan Abdul Ghaffar Khan - fondly nicknamed as "Frontier Gandhi".
