How many centuries did it take to reach this point in Christianity? How many millions were killed along the way? What percentage of the Christian population was that? What percentage would it be now? (Speaking of tremendous loss of life.)

If you add in all the casualties of the 30 Year's War, not small. I think they dwarf all the previous casualties of the European Wars of Religion, even after you toss in all the victims of the Inquisition. Europe reached a kind of exhaustion with religious wars - "Cuius regio, eius religio" is slogan of a peace formed after people know that they just can't fight anymore (the peace of Westphalia 1648).
