IMO, President Putin has shown how many of the world's best chess players are/were of Russian origin. In 1 stroke he has made a proposal that offers a silent threat to Iran - "behave or else I will turn the US on you..." - and at the same time reduced his vulnerability to US missile defense systems in Europe....

I would agree.. It is an intriguing offer.. Of course, the Azerbijianis have to agree (which they likely will, given the threats they've received from Iran).

So here we have Putin trying to "enlist" our support in increasing Russia's influence in Azerbijian, using our missile shield as a means of giving both the US and Russia an interest in keeping Azerbijian under our mutual "umbrella" of protection.

Hmmm... Not being familiar with Azerbijiani relations and how they intertwine with other factors in the region, I obviously need to study the issue a bit more..

But it is interesting how Putin tried to claim that a "defensive" system somehow possed a threat against Russia being. What's the difference having it placed in Europe, or in Azerbijian? But an Azeri based location certainly will provide us more of an opportunity of catching missiles in the "bus stage" (launch phase) before the warhead separates.
