The US historically has tried to be more than simply a rubber stamp for Israel. We have attempted with mixed success to be an "honest broker" between competing national interests in the middle east. To the extent that the US merely sides with Israel, as for example when Israel uses cluster bombs against civilians and pretends their is a military justification beyond terror and revenge, then we lose all credibility with others in the region. Perhaps it is too late for us to regain any credibility, but even then our interests will part company with Israel on key issues relating to US national security -- that is inevitable. We cannot merely rubber stamp Israeli policies and actions.
