The US has an interest in a diplomatic solution to Israel's policy of allowing Jewish "settlers" to steal land and build houses. This makes for good politics in Israel but is a key stumbling block to peace with Arab neighbors. The US has an overacrching need to establish a peaceful resolution to this and related issues in order to secure US interests beyond those immediately related to Israel, such as in Iraq and more broadly with Iran and Syria. I have already cited the use of cluster bombs, provided by the US, as an issue where our interests diverge. It does not serve US interests when Israel uses weapons of this sort to randomly murder civilians. In short, we want to help Israel obtain peace and Israel wants security. Israel is prepared to use military means to obtain security. It is in the interests of the US to see Israel make a far greater diplomatic effort to secure peace. There seems to be little political will in Israel to seriously pursue diplomatic solutions at this point in time.
