No, we're not. That's an liberal urban myth. To believe that, you have to believe that the population of the various quintile of wealth in this country are fixed - that nobody is allowed to move up or down. Nothing could be further from the truth. You also have to believe that the median wealth has been moving down in the last forty years, whereas in fact a huge list of things which used to be luxuries or non-existent are now defined as middle class necessities: computers, air conditioners, big screen TVs, dishwashers, dryers, two cars, a 2000 sq ft freestanding house with 2 1/2 baths, cell phones, the list goes on and on. |
