Agree with your main point but lets not romanticize american reaction to immigrants at the turn of the last century. Jews, Italians, Eastern Europeans were never considered lily white. I think the bigotry that immigrants face is part of some divine initiation ritual for each group. In that sense hispanics are now facing their tribulations. The way this is always overcome is when the general population feels that the foreigners pose no threat and that overall they have added not subtracted from the culture. Enter Frank Sinatra, JFK, Jonas Salk etc.
