US inserted themselves in the equation and even with the best of intentions, our participation has been counterproductive.

You noticed Khartoum; did you notice how Nasser and Hussein agreed to blame the American Air Force for their defeat? Simple moral: result would have been the same in the Arab world whether President Johnson acted or not, unless his inaction caused the Soviet fleet to move in. You think that would have been better?
