I think the point is that for many Americans the added cost is less than or equal to the added tax. The provincial taxes look to be very high. The federal comparable. One key difference I am aware of is deductability of mortgage interest.

This year our family had to use the insurance system. We maxed out our deductibles - $3000 each. Normally we never scratch the deductible. I think our monthly cost as a payroll deduction is about $400.00. The rate of access to the system was rapid.

The lesson to me this year was that even with insurance - a good cash access is critical.
