As a cross-check, researchers have scanned patients who had coronary angiography, the gold standard for assessing coronary artery disease. (A catheter is threaded through an artery in the leg or arm into the heart, and a special dye is pumped through the catheter to highlight the coronary arteries in X-ray images.) In a study described recently in the journal Circulation, researchers at six U.S. medical centers compared scans and angiograms of 710 patients with heart disease symptoms. The scans picked up coronary calcifications in 95 percent of the patients whose angiograms showed significant coronary artery disease. Most of the remaining 5 percent had atherosclerosis in only one artery. ...................................... I added to my position this week...
