Here’s why: Heart disease is the leading cause of death in this country; over 734,000 deaths in 1994 (NCHS). Early detection by Imatron technology could significantly impact on this figure. (Awareness of incipient plaque could elicit simple preventative measures, like a change in diet; early detection would prove economical to society in the long run.) There are approximately 80 million people in this country over the age of 45 (US Census). A significant percentage of these people, if educated, would choose screening, perhaps semiannually. 25 million scans per year for such screening purposes alone, requires at least 4000 scanners. This assumes that a single scanner is used continuously (every twenty minutes) on all (260) work days of a year (6240 scans per year). This is just for screening purposes, just for the US market, and doesn’t take into consideration the use of Imatron scanners for various other medical procedures.
