As far as I know, MEMC is only in the silicon wafer business. BTW, I have a very small position in a GaAs chip maker, Anadigics (ANAD), that specializes in providing chips to the communications industry. I think the gallium arsenide chip makers are an interesting group, although their market share of the overall semiconductor business is miniscule.

One other point re: your post to Mephisto. The tendency over the past two decades has been to cram more and more capability on to every chip. This is the norm. It has not reduced the number of chips being sold. Most of the weakness in the book-to-bill numbers in 1996 has been a result of industry overcapacity, and cut-throat pricing. This trend could continue for a while. But whether or not a chip maker sells his product for $12 or $6, he still needs a silicon wafer to put it on.
