The U. S. Department of Agriculture (which I hope is a more reliable source of statistics than the Fed) shows very low and still-declining world grain supplies. The chances of a bad harvest somewhere in the world are quite high. One bad harvest in one country would negate all new planting. And world population is still increasing.

A quasi-Malthusian moment may have arrived.
