Whenever I hear stories of the U.S. being sold out to foreign interests, I hearken back to the Japanese real estate binge of the 1980s when the Nikkei was roaring into the stratosphere and Japanese corporations were flush with billions of dollars to spend. They had made those profits by exporting cars, stereos, video games, and more to the USA. They had to spend that money somewhere.

Xenophobia was in fashion in the U.S. back then where the talking heads would decry the sell-off of "key" U.S. assets and properties to the fearsome Japanese.

Fast forward to the mid 90s and the Japanese walked away from their investments or sold them at a loss as mounting troubles back home took their toll. To whom did they sell those assets, you ask?

Back to Americans. At a discount. The capstone event was the billions that the Mitsubishi Estate Company lost by investing in Rockefeller Center Properties. To put it in no uncertain terms, the Japanese were fleeced and they were none the wiser for it until it was too late.

What's happening now with foreigners buying U.S. assets at inflated prices (with inflated oil profits) will happen again where those same assets will be sold back to... Americans in a few years at a nifty discount.

The faces have changed but the game remains the same.
