VPNs aren't as new as some think and involve dedicated high-bandwidth connections.

VPN

(Virtual Private Network) A wide area
communications network provided by a common
carrier that provides what seems like dedicated lines
when used, but backbone trunks are shared among all
customers as in a public network. It allows a private
network to be configured within a public network.

For years, X.25 and switched T1 services have provided VPN-like services.
However, VPN refers to newer technologies such as frame relay and ATM,
which offer more sophistication and power.

Guess what? Data Race's products are NT servers so to speak. It's the addition of the simultaneous voice and PBX features (among other things) that set them a world apart.
