OK, try these on for size:

You don't buy BT if all you're doing is data-only remote access, for starters you buy BT for the flexibility and savings of having simultaneous remote PBX features.

Also gone are busy POPs and the overloaded internet. Notice how web pages often load very slowly? Imagine trying to pull a spreadsheet during these times.

Security is quite a bit better than any VPN arrangement.

Know what you're also ignoring? The equipment & setup costs of a VPN.
You should look further into the way these really work and their limitations.
