I had a 4-month-old baby and a 2 YO toddler and living in West L.A. when my dad called and told me to turn on the TV, that Kennedy had been shot and he was on his way to Dallas to cover the story. He worked for the AP and was put in charge of the coverage for the AP.

He and a Life Magazine rep named Dick Stolley were the first 2 people to view the Zapruder film, which they watched over 70 times. Stolley outbid the AP offering Zapruder $100K while my dad was on the phone with New York trying to get an amount approval.

(The way things like that were done back then was that if different news agencies were going to pay for something, they submitted a bid in an envelope and the party selling would pick one envelope and that would be the winner.)

Whatever Stolley told Zapruder, he made the deal behind my dad's back and my dad was furious about it because Zapruder never gave him a chance to counter bid - and he didn't play by the then-prevailing rules, which no longer exist.

My dad went to the police underground garage to cover the transfer of Oswald and to get his photographer in position. He was there when Oswald was shot.

The stories of the behind the scenes pandemonium that he told were fascinating and I've regretted that I never took notes or recorded him. I can remember sitting in the living room listening to him for about 3 hours while he detailed everything that happened in trying to get the story straight, all the rumors that were flying about and the ensuing chaos in trying to capture Oswald.

One of Stolley's colleagues attended my dad's funeral and I told the story about him during the eulogy. His colleague challenged me afterward at the reception saying that Stolley wasn't going to be happy that I was telling that story about him - it made him look bad. Tough. I told him. He made himself look bad.

My dad always maintained that there were a number of frames missing from the "official" Zapruder film that the Warren Commission released. He said they were the ones of Kennedy's head exploding and that they were removed to save the family more grief. He also maintained that if those frames were available to the grassy knoll conspiracy theorist, that they would immediately change their mind because there would be no doubt from which direction the bullet came.
