There's a set-up and then the source. FYI, the source/how to predict these patterns are debatable, for it's a chicken and the egg issue.

I will explain the set-up, though, you have the temperature trough over the eastern US and temperature ridge over western US. The ridge of western US is so strong, it serves as a blockade to storms crossing the Pacific...most travel up into Alaska (thereby warming Alaska) and others take the southern route.

I would say, the source of these swells in Hawaii would be from the storm crashing into the ridge just north of Hawaii. To these storms, it's like hitching a ride on a 175+ mph jet stream and then hitting a brick wall. It's all connected, eh?
