Decades ago I read a book I believe by Huxley that pretty much suggested the way to keep an economy going was to have it constantly at war but where few at home have to suffer. He was prescient. Star Trek also had one or two episodes on this. One reason I vote Libertarian when I can is they know that the war machine is almost as much (if not more) about making some rich as it is national defense.
