They flogged or whipped him. They put a crown of thorns on him. They
put the purple robe on him. Most of us men are here with beards we shaved this
afternoon with our Remington's or Bic Razors. Jesus had his beard pulled out by
the roots. Isaiah 50:6 "I offered my back to those who beat me, my cheeks to
those who pulled out my beard; I did not hide my face from mocking and spitting."

While the "Son of Man," Jesus allows the soldiers to strap his body, his
arms, to a large wooden pole and whip his back. They strapped Jesus' arms above
his head around the pole. They would use a whip called a flagrum or flagellum
consisting of small bones and metal attached to a number of leather strands with
metal balls at the end of the strands for weight. The number of strikes is not
recorded in the Gospels. The number of strikes in Jewish law was set in
Deuteronomy 25:3 at 40, but later reduced to 39 to prevent excessive blows by a
counting error. That was nice of them! The victim often died from the beating.
Roman law did not put any limits on the number of blows given.

At first the metal balls and small pieces of bone would strike the skin
and cut through the skin only. But as each successive blow was dealt the skin
was torn away and the muscles were ripped open. Massive amounts of blood were
lost. Eventually the flesh on the back hung there in strips of raw meat.
